Holidays should be about rest and recharging, not creating major headaches. If you’re heading out of town, take these simple precautions to keep your home safe and give you peace of mind.
Do yourself a favour and to relieve the tension of possible disaster when you leave your house empty over the holiday period with our top 5 tips.
1. Lock up when you leave
Deadlock doors and windows including balcony doors and garage doors. Also lock your garden shed and any side gates accessing your property. Ensure if you have a security alarm that it is functional and on whilst away.
2. Keep your travel plans offline.
If you are planning to travel during the holiday season, be sure to keep your travel plans off your social media networks. Never post where you are going, when you are leaving, or when you will be back. This is prime information for a thief because he will know when your house will be empty.
3. Notify a neighbour.
Ask a trusted neighbour to keep an eye on your house and report any suspicious activity. You may also want to ask your neighbour to pick up your mail and newspapers while you are away. Make sure your house looks like somebody is home.
4. Make your home seem occupied
Use timers to automatically switch on lights and radios while you are away. Also if you have family members or a reliable friend who may access the home whilst away to show that there is activity around the house, it can often be a good option so long as they secure the property when they leave.
5. Keep your valuables safe
Keep valuables out of sight and don’t leave them where they can be seen through a window. If you intend to conceal valuables in your home, avoid obvious hiding places
